SETTING
The setting V1.0-2002-02-04
---------------------------
The game is driven mainly by the conflicts of different political fractions.
Currently planned are:
- The King of the land, Haidric Adonai I and his queen
Elorin Adonai. He's in the unfortunate position that he rules the land,
but he does not rule trade (except some minor taxes) or his capital
city, Cymrill. Strong trader families and the mayor are in his way
and he wants to get rid of them, to be a "true ruler" again like his
ancestors were.
- The Mayor of Cymrill, Eliot Syngh. A rich tradesman with the right
friends, being the mayor for quite a long time already. He struggles
to replace the king. Affiliated somehow with the owners of the Cymrill
bank
- The "Democrats". Pretending to trying to establish a democratic system
in the underground. Elrydor, Tyte and Xantha belong to them. It's unknown
though wether each member truly follows the ideals of the group, or wether
they have an own hidden agenda (e.g. see the threat of Tyte to the player
about Elrydor killing him if he opened the letter from the startup quest)
- The Circle of the mages. They generally speak of ending the oppression of
the mages by the people. Intend to eradicate all technology and political
systems to establish a purely magical society.
Furthermore, 3 religious groups are involved:
- Followers of gods of chaos
- Followers of gods of order
- Followers of a monotheistic religion which wants to get rid of the
chaos/order dualism
These religious groups follow their own short term goals and may temporarily
ally with different political groups.
The world itself
----------------
The game could be summarized as "dark fantasy". People live in a sort of
Dark Ages. There is only one race, humans. People show different magical
abilities by birth, inheritance of magic is possible, but sometimes it just
springs up in a so far non-magical family. The world has primitive technology.
Iron and steel are known, also the steam engine. Modern science is only just
beginning with the discovery of the steam engine and similar low level
technologies, leading to conflicts of scientist with the more traditional
mages. Projectil weapons are unknown, crossbows, bows and catapults are
the only known range weapons. Limited mining of coal and gas happens, for
example Cymrill - the center of the known world and the most technically
advanced city, is lighted by gas lamps at night. Seafaring is extremly
limited - it is yet unknown wether "The Land", the continent Cymrill is placed
on, is the only continent or not - at least it seems far away enough from
any other possibly existing continents that any motivation for seafaring except
fishing or travelling to the smaller islands at The Land's coast has ceased
to exist. The true, globe nature of the world has yet not been discovered.
